Our History

Groupement de Production Agricole

The Groupement de Production Agricole is a Togolese agricultural science cooperative started by graduates of the School of Agronomy at the Universite de Benin in Lome, the capital of Togo. Specializing in fertilizers and increased production through mixed culture, the members trained subsistence farmers to produce a more reliable yield through planting a diversity of crops in the same field, and integration of livestock raising with field crops. After installing irrigation wells on three farms, the GPA began to work in water supply in rural areas.

The GPA operates on the following principles of commitment to the rural communities in which we serve:

Commitment - one well or one farm can't be the whole story for any village. The GPA will always be available until safe drinking water is available to everyone in the village.

Sustainability - Our local presence and partnerships with other cooperatives and NGOs ensure that qualified help will be available when maintenance is needed.

Community participation - Village water committees and farm cooperatives are democratic structures where the principles of the democratic process can serve the community best.

Good science - Educated professionals can provide the best designs at the village level. Many projects fail because an off-the-shelf design was not economically adequate for the village in which it was implemented.

Working Together

Together, GPA and Wells for Life hope to bring cable tool drill rigs to Togo to construct the wells that farmers need at a reasonable price. In many areas of the country, cable tool rigs should be able to construct village public water supply wells, as well. The use of the low-cost alternative to expensive, high powered drilling equipment will require careful study of the available imagery of the country, and ground-water exploration using geophysical methods. Together we hope to increase the pace of development of Togo's water resources for public health and agriculture, and to put the capacity to install new wells in the hands of Togolese drilling contractors.
